Project NEO Robotics
FRC Team #1164

The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team for all Las Cruces area high schoolers and homeschoolers

Our mission

Fostering innovation, teamwork, and leadership

Project NEO is dedicated to inspiring students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through hands-on robotics experience, we foster innovation, teamwork, and leadership skills that prepare students for the future while actively enriching our local community.

Project NEO is New Mexico's longest-sustaining FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team. Founded in 2003 in a mentor's garage, the team is open to all Las Cruces Area high schoolers and homeschoolers. No experience necessary! We'll teach you everything you need to know.

What it takes to build a robot

Students can follow their interests and participate in any Project NEO subteam. Subteams typically have their own student and mentor leadership.

Prototyping and CAD

After the FRC robot game is announced in January, students prototype and design a robot and components, evaluating designs for success. The team uses sophisticated computer-aided design (CAD) software for the final design which helps visualization and speeds manufacturing.

Mechanical and Electronics

Students fabricate robot components in a fully-equipped machine shop using tools that include bandsaws, drill presses, lathe's and welders, as well has hand tools. The robot also contains computing elements such as central processors, vision cameras, speed controllers, sensors, and sophisticated networking.

Software and Systems

Our coders work as a collaborative software development team, with multiple students typically contributing to the code that drives and operates the robot. Students also configure and tune the drive and operational systems of the robot.

Communications and Marketing

The communications and marketing team works to promote Project NEO as well as FIRST Robotics demonstrating writing and presentation skills. This team is also responsible for Project NEO's FIRST Impact submission that highlights the team's outreach efforts and adherence to FIRST core principles.
